How to Calculate Hours Between Two Times

To find the time difference between two clock times, convert both times to minutes, subtract the start time from the end time, and then convert the result back into hours and minutes.

Formula

Total Minutes = End Time - Start Time

Total Hours = Total Minutes ÷ 60

If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculation may cross midnight, so 24 hours are added to the end time before subtracting.

Example: Hours between two times

Start Time: 8:30 AM
End Time: 9:21 PM

9:21 PM = 21:21 in 24-hour time
8:30 AM = 08:30

Difference = 21:21 - 08:30 = 12 hours 51 minutes

In decimal form, that is 12.85 hours, or 771 minutes.

Cross-midnight example

Start Time: 10:15 PM
End Time: 6:45 AM

Because the end time is earlier on the clock, the calculator treats the end time as the next day.

Result: 8 hours 30 minutes

How to Calculate Hours Between Two Dates and Times

To calculate the difference between two dates and times, first convert both date-time entries into exact timestamps. Then subtract the earlier timestamp from the later one to get the total elapsed minutes, hours, and days.

Formula

Elapsed Time = End Date-Time - Start Date-Time

Total Minutes = Elapsed Milliseconds ÷ 60,000

Total Hours = Total Minutes ÷ 60

Days = Total Minutes ÷ 1,440

Example: Hours between two dates and times

Start: Nov. 10, 2025, 6:39 AM
End: Nov. 11, 2025, 8:26 PM

From Nov. 10 at 6:39 AM to Nov. 11 at 6:39 AM = 24 hours
From 6:39 AM to 8:26 PM = 13 hours 47 minutes

Total difference = 1 day 13 hours 47 minutes

That is also 37 hours 47 minutes, or about 37.78 hours, or 2,267 minutes.
